“In the dark aftermath of Valentine’s Day, it can be comforting to have a good laugh,” says Migdal. Her set debuts the character of Machiavellian psychiatrist Dr. Rhonda, who will present excerpts from her cartoon self-help book, How To Train Your Lover In Five Easy Steps. Rebecca Migdal was a 1989 recipient of the Franklin Furnace Fund for Performance Emerging Artists Grant, sharing that honor with The Blue Man Group. During the 90’s she fronted the New York avant-pop bands The Rubber Dahls and Clockwork Robin. She created her first graphic novel, Zombie Punk, in 1997, and has been a member of the World War 3 Illustrated collective since 2003.

Comic book artist and writer Sandy Jimenez will read and present images from an extended version of I Was a Lousy Teacher, from his long-running illustrated series of stories about life in New York City. Sandy Jimenez’s first published comic book work appeared in World War 3 Illustrated in 1991. He is the creator behind Marley Davidson: Bronx Exorcist and as a filmmaker and writer, he was a recipient of the ABC/Disney New Talent Development Grant in 2005. His first feature length motion picture, The Likes of Us, was completed in 2009.

Legendary graphic artist Seth Tobocman will perform works from You Don’t Have to Fuck People Over to Survive, a powerhouse assemblage of his most enduring images.
“Seth is an equal-opportunity offender of the powerful—the rich, the complacent winners, the gentrifiers, and especially those whose positions and attainments rest on violence,” writes critic Alan W. Moore in his introduction to the new edition of the 1989 classic, re-issued by AK press. “His characters are driven through misery and despair to the moment of decision when they push back, or stand up.” Tobocman is one of the founding editors of World War 3 Illustrated, an author/illustrator of three collections, and an educator. He has shown his work in streets and galleries across the globe—including Exit Art, The Museum of Modern Art, and the New Museum of Contemporary Art.

Scott Blakeman has made more than thirty national television appearances, including Comedy Central’s Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn, and co-host of several political humor segments on NBC’s “Sunday Today”. Scott was the warmup comedian for the Late Show with David Letterman and the CBS comedy series Welcome To New York. He can be heard regularly on National Public Radio.

Scott co-founded Standup for Peace: The Two Comedian Solution to Middle East Peace with Palestinian-American comedian Dean Obeidallah, performing a highly acclaimed evening of Jewish and Arab-American comedy.

Come Hell Or High Winds-Artists Sneak Past Police Blockade To Attend Yes Men Comic Signing

L to R: Seth Tobocman, Andy Bichlbaum, Rebecca Migdal at MoCCA

L to R: Seth Tobocman, Andy Bichlbaum, Rebecca Migdal at MoCCA

Oh Good Lord. My darndest luck gave me a run for the money yesterday when the police wouldn’t let people into the building were I was having a book signing with the Yes Men.

Andy Laties and I had spent weeks planning the event at MoCCA, a reading and book signing of the Yes Men Comic.

Despite a somewhat last minute promotional campaign, the signing had been covered on Time Out NY and the Gothamist, and I was expecting a pretty decent turnout for the 5-6 pm event. But there it was, 5:30 PM and Yes Man Andy Bichlbaum, World War 3 Illustrated Editor Seth Tobocman and I were sitting at a table piled high with books, staring at an empty gallery

Seth had agreed to read in place of Yes Man Mike Bonanno, who had gotten stuck in traffic. Andy L and Eric Blitz were set up and ready to accompany us. As the minutes ticked by, Andy Bichlbaum was getting restless. It was the New York premiere of The Yes Men Fix the World, and he had a thing or two to do besides sit there waiting for the promised crowds, which were clearly not forthcoming.

Suddenly cartoonist Bob Sikoryak (of RAW fame) burst into the small museum with sculptor and book artist Michalis Pichler. The two fellows were quite elated that they’d managed to make it into the building by resorting to various circuitous routes through neighboring shops, thus evading the complete police blockade of 580 Broadway and neighboring buildings (we were located at 574 Broadway.)

We’d realized something was up when we arrived by car and Broadway was blocked off to traffic. But since we had loaded in from the Crosby Street back entrance (now closed), we hadn’t realized that pedestrians were not even allowed to walk up the block, much less enter the building.

Other hardy attendees who slipped past the truncheons and made it to our gulag were artist Katalina Gutierrez, model Louisa Ashleigh Krupp and World War 3 Illustrated editor Carlo Quispe, who marked his entrance with a victory dance.

We finally had a small but distinguished audience, and the reading went forward in the nick of time.  Now all we had to do was escape with our gear. Carrying the equipment downstairs was no picnic, but those who took the elevator were in for more trouble yet:  Eric Blitz was trapped on Broadway, unable to depart for half and hour after he left the building, having been caught in with a group of hapless pedestrians near a barricade who were ordered not to move. Good going, New York’s Finest! Nothing like living in a police state to make you appreciate the Yes Men’s call to artistic arms.

The reason for all this hullaballoo? Debris from the roof of 580 Broadway had been blown into the street by the high winds. So it was for our own safety, after all.

Here’s a shout out to all of you who braved the NYPD to come, and to those who were stranded on the street, whether coming or going. At least nobody was hit in the head by a brick…

The Yes Men and Rebecca Migdal, Peter Kuper at MoCCA this week

ym-postcard-mocca
Come on down to the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art, MoCCA on Wednesday from 5-6 for a signing event and free comics! The Yes Men, Mike Bonanno and Andy Bichlbaum, will be there with Rebecca signing free copies of “Judgement Day”, a fictionalized comic about the notorious duo that will also appear in the next issue of World War 3 Illustrated.
It’s all part of the promotional frenzy, not only for the New York Premiere of The Yes Men Fix the World at the Film Forum this week, but for a whole slew of arts activism hijinx that are planned in the coming weeks leading up to the Climate Summit in Copenhagen. You can participate in more extravagant ways, such as by taking the Yes Men Challenge to do perform a Yes Man stunt of your own, or by signing up to wear a survivaball as a hilarious act of civil disobedience.
In any case, I hope you’ll stop by to meet us, either at the Film Forum Premiere or MoCCA, and get your free comic– copies of the spoof NY Post and NY Times will be available too.
Even if you can’t come to the signing, do drop by MoCCA soon, and you’ll have the pleasure of seeing the current Exhibition of Peter Kuper’s art from Diario de Oaxaca.

The Yes Men Strike Again

The Yes Men hit NY yesterday at 6 AM with a truth bomb cleverly disguised as the New York Post.

The headline article, “We’re Screwed”, led off with a story that was buried when it first came out: the results of Bloomburg’a commission on climate change and its effects on NYC. Pretty scary stuff.

As the faux Post issue hit the streets, lots of News coverage ensued. My favorite came from the Yes Men camp itself, this video by Hidden Driver:

“SPECIAL EDITION” NEW YORK POST from The Yes Men on Vimeo.

My favorite part? The sneery, suited dinosaur from the Post (don’t know who) railing against Obama socialist alarmists. He gets so mad he backs into a passing bicyclist -a senior man who wobbles and nearly crashes. The Post Pundit-osaurus then points an accusing finger at the fellow and calls him an Environmentalist. Precious.

World War 3 Illustrated launches a web comic blog

This webcomic blog has been created to provide a home for members of the World War 3 Illustrated collective who wish to publish comics online. It is by no means a definitive representation of the artists who have been involved over the past 30 years in publishing the magazine, but rather a service made available to the group by one of its members. If you are a contributor and you would like to help make this web comic happen, and/or make some of your work available to the public in this forum, please contact the administrator, Rebecca Migdal.
